Simon Sinek: Reflection post

Leadership can be simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Sounds simple enough, but after watching Marie Folio interview with Simon Sinek, he explains why its not that simple at al

During the interview Simon first talked about his physiological struggle of running a small business. What I mean by this is he was running his business well but had no passion for what he was doing. He soon started to resent going to work everyday and lost all motivation for his business. After feeling the lows he felt he wanted to help everybody else who was lost and struggling to find passion. He decided to fist help soldiers find their passion by going overseas and speaking with them. While overseas the base he was staying at was under attack, he came out okay but for the rest of the time he was obsessed with his safety.

This chain of events helped Simon understand the true meaning of leadership and how to become a great leader in a business environment. One of his biggest points was safety, people are use to fearing the workplace, people are now comfortable moving from job to job through out the year. This is because most large corporations fear their boss and fear making mistakes. Simon is driven to change that stigma, people who fear the work place go into work feeling paranoid and feeling that they have to be able to back up their work at anytime. As a leader of an organization Simon said you must control your environment so that each employee feels safe, this could mean anything from the safety of his or her lives to the safety of theirs jobs. He also said when employees feel safe they will work more efficiently and work more creatively.

Overall I took a lot out of this video, but the biggest thing is that anybody can be a leader, but being dominate and forceful doesn’t make you a great leader, and being an authority figure doesn’t make you a leader. In reality there is more to being a leader then those stigmas on leadership. It’s about having a passion for what you are doing and caring about other before caring about yourself. If you put yourself behind others especially in a work environment, your employees with see that and feel more confidantes and have more passion for their work.
