How to Write Your Best Email Ever

So you want to write a great email, huh? Problem is, you have no idea where to start. Look no further, the following blog post will go over just a few of the basics in email creation, hopefully leaving you feeling just a little less flustered over the whole process.

Where to begin, there are just so many factors. Now,before you turn off your monitor and start watching reruns of “Friends”, go over a few of the following:

Greeting

A greeting is the first point of contact with a recipient of an email, and in most cases sets the tone for the rest of the message. Use formal greetings to the extent in which you are familiar with someone. Dont know them? Do not assume you can use their first name like you are friends, incorporate a last name if possible. The farther away you can get from “To whom it may concern” and “Hello there”, the better. Take the time to learn someones name, and think carefully if you are using it in the correct context.

Keep it Classy

Just because you think you have a close enough relationship with someone to use text talk in an email, refrain from doing so. Poorly written and sloppy wordage can be attributed to a lack of care in the email being sent. In a formal sense, always remain professional in work related emails. Age also does not matter in proper email, do not talk to a 20 year old any different than you would a 40 year old in a work setting.

Subject Lines

Nothing worse than a sketchy subject line, that would cause you to believe the email was of a spam decent. A good way to come up with your subject line, is to first write your email, then once completed, you will have a basic idea of what you should specify as the subject.

Structure

Make the email neat, timely and easy to read. Do not waste valuable time with unnecessary content, or the dreaded “whitespace”. Have a clear layout, with a beginning, middle, and end; the more simple the layout, the better.
