What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  It is a marketing discipline that focuses on growing search engine results.  SEO combines the creative and technical elements that are required to boost rankings and drive traffic in search engines.

What do you need to know, about SEO?

1. Quality over quantity.

More words does not equal more traffic on your site.  Research what kind of content gets the highest amount of engagement, and use that to your advantage.

2. Use links!

Links are a good thing, as long as they are valid! Links can help bring more traffic to your page so use them when you can.  The way that you structure your content is very important.

3. Google gives priority to capitalized letters.

When you use images, make sure that you caption them properly.  Google with give priority to a photo captioned “Sunflower_Seattle_Public_Market” than it will to a photo captioned “sunflower_seattle_public_market”.  Side note: your page will load faster if you don’t put words on top of your photos!

4. Make sure your URL makes sense

You only get one URL so make sure it is simple, but describes the content that you are going to put on your page.

5. Compress your photos!

Although I mentioned this before, it is so important! Make sure that you compress your images so that your page can load as fast as possible! The best size for photos is between 150kb and 200kb.

6. Meta tags

Meta tags give a small description of the page, which makes it easier for users to find your page using simple searches! This is a way to make your page show up higher in search engines.

7. Create awesome content that you love

Make sure what you are posting about, is something you’re passionate about. Be descriptive and creative with your page.
