Simon Sinek: The What? How? and Why? of Positivity

Simon Sinek believes positive mindsets create effective leaders who inspire others to have positive mindsets too, turning "I can't" into "I can"

Who is Simon Sinek?

Simon Sinek is a motivational speaker and business owner. Yet, he does not simply teach others. Simon teaches himself and then uses those experiences and newly acquired knowledge to inform the public.

In “How to Be a Great Leader: Inspiring Others To Do Remarkable Things,” Simon reveals how he learned to truly love work – by fostering other people’s success.

How to Foster Success

From Simon Sinek’s story, three points emphasized the best ways and reasons to foster other people’s success:

  1. The most productive environments create brother/sister relationships. When a group, whether it is business, military, or family, feels connected and important to their peers, their positivity and empathy increases. Consequentially, they get their work done on time to better support their team. Relationships are key to this because humans are social creatures who require a sense of trust and safety. Therefore, employees will be their very best when they feel no fear nor sadness when entering the workplace.
  2. A leader’s mission is to manifest this family culture for their underlings by creating pleasant work environments. Leaders accomplish this when they focus on employees and not on the employees’ work. Inspired employees do their work, making bring down the hammer unnecessary. A negative leader makes negative environments and negative employees. Negativity increases stress and decreases empathy. Therefore, emphasizing positivity will reverberate throughout the business because everyone will feel important and cared about.
  3. Finally, once these ideas are in place, people will be more willing to do something without the expectation of a reward, acknowledgement, or favor. Positive environments encourage employee positivity. Also, positive employees are more positive people in general, like by doing good deeds just to do the deed. Such behaviors act as a positive feedback loop because the employees will have higher levels of oxytocin. This oxytocin makes them happier and healthier, and more productive at work.

Pushing Past Negativity

Most people, whether they are leaders or followers, know how hard it is to not get angry, disappointed, or stressed at work. If an environment is negative, then the true leaders will show themselves by taking action by trying to uplift others. If a boss is smart, they will see the good that comes from being good. Furthermore, if a leader is unable to make their people happy and productive, they should reach out for help. No one has all the answers, but it takes a true leader to see their faults and seek out support to make their employees happier, healthier, and more fulfilled at work.
